Your Guide to ICF Coaching Credentials – And Why They Matter

Have you ever asked yourself:
What really makes a coach credible?

In a world where anyone can call themselves a coach, ICF coaching credentials stand out. They show that a coach has done the work not just personally, but professionally. That they’ve trained, practiced, been mentored, and assessed. That they’re committed to growth — their own and their clients’.

And for those of us who care about coaching with integrity and making an impact, this matters.

Why Coaching Credentials Matter

The coaching world is growing fast — and that’s exciting. But with growth comes confusion. Clients (and aspiring coaches) often ask:

How do I know if a coach is qualified?

Is coaching training enough, or do I need certification?

Does credentialing actually make a difference?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) provides a clear answer — and a global standard.

In fact, according to the 2022 ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study, 85% of coaching clients say it’s important (or very important) that their coach holds a certification or credential.

Credentials don’t just show skill — they build trust.

They signal that you’ve:

  • Completed professional coaching training
  • Learned and applied the ICF Core competencies
  • Committed to ethical coaching practice
  • Received mentoring
  • Been assessed by trained assessors

And most importantly — that you take this profession seriously.

In this session, our co-founder Isil Uysal explains the ICF credentialing path, what it takes to get certified, and how you can begin.

The Three Main ICF Coaching Credentials

As you explore your coaching journey, you’ll likely come across these titles:

MCC – Master Certified Coach

ACC – Associate Certified Coach

PCC – Professional Certified Coach

Each level has its own requirements in terms of coaching training hours, experience, and mentoring. Here’s a simple breakdown:

CredentialTraining RequiredCoaching HoursPaid HoursMinimum Clients
ACC60 hrs (Level 1)100758
PCC125 hrs (Level 2)50045025
MCC200 hrs total2.5002.25035

Note: BeCoach Academy offers both Level 1 and Level 2 ICF-accredited coaching training programs.

Which Credential is Right for You?

With a Level 2 training you can apply right away to PCC when you collected 500 hours of coaching experience. Or you might apply to ACC first when you have 100 hours of coaching experience, and then PCC. Many of our students at BeCoach Academy choose their path based on what fits their goals and capacity — and we support both.

Whether you’re looking to become a coach, lead more effectively, or apply coaching skills in your organization, the goal isn’t to chase letters, it’s to develop professional coaching skills that make a difference.

The Application Process (It’s Simpler Than You Think)

If you’ve completed an ICF-accredited coaching training program like the ones at BeCoach Academy, you’re already on the path.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A coaching log (tracking your coaching hours)
  • An ICF final exam (shorter for ACC, more in-depth for PCC)

If your training is from mixed sources, you can still apply through the Portfolio path, which requires more documentation but it’s entirely possible.

Why Now Might Be the Right Time

You don’t need to figure everything out before you begin.

What matters is that you start: with curiosity, with intention, and with practice.

If you’re thinking about becoming a coach, or you’re already coaching and wondering how to grow, now is a good time to experience what ICF coaching actually feels like.
